KIDS PROGRAM: AGES 4-11
Summer Reading Program starts June 1st, 2017

Overview

We want to help you fill your summer with books, creativity, and fun at the library! This summer we invite you to read 5 books, make 5 things, and explore in 5 ways. You can read books from home or from the library. You can make things at home or at our makerspace, Square One. You can explore events at the library, our library resources, places in the community, or just learn something new.

After you read five books you will get a free book. To complete the program you must read 5 books, make 5 things, and explore in five ways. Then you will get a prize and an entry into our end-of-summer raffle for tickets to museums, sporting events, shows, a Kindle Fire, or a robot you can program!

Kids who complete the Read, Make, Explore challenge can continue to read throughout the summer to earn more badges, a couple more prizes, and additional entries into the big raffle. We hope you will join us in exploring all the library and the community have to offer!

You can log everything in Beanstack and choose between logging books, or logging in minutes which is better for older readers. You can use a paper log you pick up at the library or print from our website, though paper logs will not have as many ideas for activities as the online site. We wish you an amazing summer!

Special thanks go to the Friends of the Woodland Public Library. Without their wonderful support and sponsorship, the library would not be able to provide these special programs.

Prizes and Raffle Entries

Kids will win a free book after reading and logging five books, or five 30-minute blocks of reading (online only). After they complete the program by logging five books, making five things, and exploring in five ways, they will win a choice of a toy prize as well as an entry into the raffle. Prizes may vary based upon availability. The prize store will open on Monday, June 18th, and prizes can be claimed until August 11th.

Logging and Badges

On Beanstackkids will earn badges for logging books or minutes, and for completing Make and Explore activities. Click on the activity badges to see the choices. There is always a choice to write in your own idea. Completing one activity will earn you a badge. They have a spot to write in what you did or to enter a secret code. These will be given out at performances during the summer.

For kids logging on paper, there are some suggestions of activities for Make and Explore on the log. If you want to have more ideas we recommend you use Beanstack.

Kids can continue to read and log throughout the summer to win more badges, two more prizes, and two more entries into the raffle. Paper logs are available at the library or you can print the kids' log in English here. Print a Spanish log here.

Raffle

The raffle will be held in August shortly after the program ends. Children are automatically entered, but must have a phone number or email in Beanstack to win. The grand prizes will be won by the top raffle winners. These prizes are a Kindle Fire or a programmable robot. Other prizes include tickets and passes to things like a River Cats baseball game, Explorit, Rocknasium, a show at the Woodland Opera House, and more. Winners of these will be notified that the prizes will be given out at the kids’ desk on a first come, first serve basis, to ensure that kids get passes they will use. All prizes must be claimed by August 25th or they will be given to runners up.

Summer Events

This summer we will have our regular storytimes including the Farmer's Market Storytime on Saturdays outside at 10:00 AM. Chess Club and Sticks in the Stacks are for all ages and will meet during the summer as well.

The Summer at the Library Kickoff Party will be on June 9th from 1:00-3:00 in the library courtyard and in the Leake Room, with a performance by Drea Lusion. There will be face painting, games hosted by Rec2Go, and an opportunity to register and pick up a log for the program.

We will have free lunch for kids 18 and under starting on June 11th, which they can enjoy on the lawn in front of the library between 12 and 12:30. There will be popsicles for readers, and outdoor fun weekly with the TAB teens. On Tuesdays we will have special events and performers starting at 1 PM, with shows including circus arts, magic, science, and puppetry, as well as bugs with the Bohart, a lesson from Kuk Sool Won, and more. Wednesday we will have Legos out in the kids’ room from 1-3. Thursdays at 1 PM we will host Make and Explore Thursdays in Square One where kids can make a craft and try out coding on computers and robots.
