|On the 26th of January 2013 at 12:44 am, a Woodland Police Department K-9 officer conducted a traffic stop on a bicyclist in the 100 block of W. Main St. The officer stopped the bicyclist for riding his bike on the sidewalk and for not having an operative light. |
During the course of the stop, the officer learned that the bicyclist, 44 year old Reggie Dickerson, was on searchable probation for grand theft. As the officer was conducting a search of Dickerson's person, the officer felt an object he believed to be contraband in Dickerson's shirt. When the officer tried to retrieve the object, Dickerson spun his body away almost causing the officer to fall on the ground.
As the officer attempted to regain control of Dickerson, Dickerson repeatedly elbowed the officer. The ensuing struggle sent both Dickerson and the officer from the south sidewalk of W. Main St into the roadway. Once in the roadway, Dickerson retrieved the item from his shirt and threw a suspected glass pipe on the roadway. As Dickerson continued to physically resist, the officer released his police service canine from the patrol car. The police canine bit Dickerson on the left arm causing him to submit to the officer. The arresting officer held Dickerson at gun point until responding officers arrived and handcuffed the proned suspect.
Woodland Fire personnel and AMR paramedics responded and tended to the officer's and Dickerson's injuries. The arresting officer sustained a serious but non life threatening injury to his hand and minor scrapes about his body. Dickerson was transported to the Woodland Memorial Hospital where he was medically cleared and treated for injuries sustained to his left arm. After being treated, Dickerson was booked at the Yolo County Jail for resisting an officer using force, resisting an officer causing injury, and a violation of probation; all three charges are felonies and Dickerson is being held without bail.
Reggie Joe Dickerson, a transient from Sacramento County, was recently released from the custody of the California Department of Corrections and had his parole transferred to the Sacramento County Probation Department. In accordance with the current realignment of CDCR inmates and their release into the community, non-violent offenders such as Dickerson were granted early release and placed on Post Release Community Supervison where they are supervised by county probation departments.
Anybody who witnessed the incident or has further information is encouraged to call the Woodland Police Department at 530-666-2411.
