Kentucky Avenue Widening and Complete Streets Project

This week, city staff received Caltrans and Federal authorization to proceed with construction on the Kentucky Avenue Project.  Staff is finalizing the project documents for bid advertisement late September/early October with bid opening anticipated in November.

Construction of public utility improvements and private utility relocations are anticipated to begin by November 2016 with the roadway widening and reconstruction work to begin in spring 2017. The project is estimated to be complete by December 2018.

During project construction there will be significant traffic impacts to Kentucky Avenue including reduced access, lane closures and some short-term full road closures. During the project, signs will be placed requesting that drivers use alternate routes. Signs will also be placed to notify the public that the project is funded by Measure E and State/Federal Grant Funding.

The project includes widening and reconstructing Kentucky Avenue between East and West streets.  The project will include new sidewalk, curb/gutter and bike lanes in addition to the widening and reconstruction of the roadway.  The widened roadway will consist of one lane in each direction and a two-way turn-lane from West to College streets.  From College to East streets the roadway will consist of two lanes in each direction and center medians or turn-lanes.
