***DROUGHT UPDATE***

News ImageUntil we complete construction of our Surface Water Project, groundwater remains Woodland's only source of water. Due in part to the drought, the City's groundwater levels are now the lowest in recent history. Currently the City has 19 groundwater wells. Some groundwater wells are already 'off line’ due to contaminant levels and others may need to be shut down if water levels keep dropping. This could result in water shortages and mandatory restrictions on water use in the near future.

You can help avoid water shortages by limiting water use from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. when the demand on our water supply is at its maximum. We are urging customers to refrain from watering lawns or irrigating landscaping during these times.

Water users’ efforts to conserve water have already resulted in a 20% reduction in water use from recent years and helped the situation from being worse. Please continue doing what you can to conserve and avoid using water, as much as possible, during the above "peak" hours.

By working together, we can avoid water shortages and protect the groundwater wells that we rely upon for our water supply. For additional information and tips on easy ways to save water, please visit cityofwoodland.org/waterconservation, and/or contact our water conservation staff at conservewater@cityofwoodland.org; (530) 661-2067.

Thank you,

Paul Navazio
City Manager

Take Action to Protect Your Water Supply

News ImageWoodland is currently asking water customers to voluntarily cut back water use by 20% in order to prevent potential future water shortages. 2014 is starting out as the third dry year in a row. The Governor has delcared a drought emergency. Little or no rain means the City has less groundwater to pump, and pumping water to deliver to homes and businesses becomes more expensive. As the demand for water increases during the summer months, we could face a shortage in water supplies. For tips on conserving water both indoors and outdoors, please visit www.cityofwoodland.org/waterconservation.

Notice from PG&E about Natural Gas Odor

News Image"PG&E has determined that natural gas imported into our system was over odorized and is currently in our pipelines, moving through the northern part of our service area right now.

A strong odor is being reported in many of these areas. PG&E believes it is due to the high amount of odorant in the gas in our transmission system.

The smell from the extra odorant is expected to steadily dissipate through the weekend. The odorant is a safe chemical that is added to gas to help customers detect gas leaks. The odor will dissipate safely into the atmosphere.

PG&E is experiencing increased call volume and customers' may experience extended wait times for calls and service appointments as a result of the situation.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused area residents. "

Odors in Woodland

News ImageLately there have been noticeable odors near the east end of Woodland. City officials believe some of these odors were caused when the City of Woodland Water Pollution Control Facility started drying the un-used wastewater treatment ponds; this is being done in preparation for the conversion of the sewage treatment ponds to storm water storage and treatment ponds. These ponds are located south east of the I-5/CR 102 interchange.

Potential March of Dimes Event

News ImageFire Chief Tod Reddish attended a March of Dimes kick-off meeting on June 24 for the March for Babies Relay the organization hopes to bring to Woodland on September 26 at Pioneer High School (both date and location are tentative at this time). This event would be a 9-hour relay in a very similar, if not identical, format to the Relay for Life except that this event will start at 12 Noon and end at 9pm. The MOD hopes to raise $25,000 locally towards their efforts in research and prevention of premature childbirth and the significance of the 9 hours is that each unborn child and their mother need and deserve a full-term 9 month pregnancy in order to maximize the baby’s short-term and long-term health. March of Dimes organizers are looking for Woodland community members to work as volunteers to help organize and implement this event.

This is a rapidly evolving public health situation not because of the severity of this particular influenza, but because the health community has no history with this particular strain and it is unknown how severe it may become as it spreads.
