The Woodland Fire Department received a call at 7:27 PM Thursday for fuel tanks on fire at the 300 block of Industrial Way, in Woodland. This incident was a single engine response, yet, was quickly upgraded to a first alarm structure fire assignment once additional information was received that a compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling station was involved. This upgraded alarm brought two additional engine companies, a truck company and a Battalion Chief to the scene, for a total of 13 personnel.
Once on scene, crews found fire coming from the mechanical equipment that pumps the CNG to the fill station. A defensive strategy was initiated utilizing heavy streams of water directed onto the involved, and exposed equipment. Additional information was gathered at the incident indicating that the involved equipment was a CNG compressor that was supplied natural gas from an underground source, as well as an above ground storage vessels. Firefighters were able to approach the storage vessels and close the valves that supplied the compressor, while PG&E shut down the underground supply to the compressor. The fire was contained at 9:00 PM.
No evacuations were ordered at the time of the incident, and two firefighters sustained minor injuries suppressing the fire. The cities of West Sacramento and Davis provided coverage to the city of Woodland until Woodland Fire personnel were released from the incident.
