Adulting 101 Life Skills for Teens

All 7th-12th grade students in Yolo County are invited to attend the second annual “Adulting 101: Life Skills for Teens- Covid Edition” hosted by the Woodland Public Library and the Library’s Teen Advisory Board. This free event will be held online via live Zoom classes during a span of 5 weeks starting on Wednesday, September 2nd at 4:30 PM.

Students can sign up at https://wpl.beanstack.org/ to attend 15 virtual interactive classes taught by experts from non-profit organizations, government agencies, and businesses. Teens do not have to attend every class to participate, however, students who attend all 15 virtual classes will be entered into a raffle to win a $500 Cash Scholarship sponsored by Friends of the Woodland Public Library. Random raffle prizes will be drawn each week during Adulting 101.

Teens must be able to register through Zoom with a valid email account. All classes will be recorded and made available for viewing afterward. Students do not have to turn on their video/audio however attendance will be recorded for each class.

Last year’s in person event at the Woodland Community and Senior Center drew attendance of over 100 students from throughout the county.

Karen Sandoval, senior at Pioneer High, states, “I’m glad the library and Teen Advisory Board is still hosting Adulting 101, even if it’s online. Events like this are important for us teens to learn skills beyond school.”

Sandoval and other Teen Advisory Board members of the Woodland Public Library stated it’s crucial that Adulting 101 covers topics that youth are passionate about like the upcoming elections, anti-racism, and mental health.

The following schedule and topics reflects the matters that teens are most concerned about learning:

Week One: Media Matters

Wednesday 9/2 @ 4:30, Fake News & Mainstream Media- How to be an informed citizen through reading and research with Rhea Gardner, Master in Library and Information Science and the Woodland Public Library Teen Advisory Board.

Thursday 9/3 @ 4:30, Why Start Networking- The importance of networking to further your career goals with Anne Davis, CEO of Davis East Consulting Firm for non-profit organizations.

Week Two: College & Careers

Wednesday 9/9 @ 4:30, How To Get A Job- The full job application process from resume to interview and after with Rachael Smith, Senior Human Resources Analyst (presented by Rhea).

Thursday 9/10 @ 4:30, Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting College And How Do I Even Apply?- College knowledge and tips given by real college students and graduates of the UC Davis Early Academic Outreach Program.

Saturday 9/12 @ 11 AM, Rights of Minors- Your rights and the criminal justice system with Melinda Aiello, Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney.

Week Three: Financial & Physical Health

Wednesday 9/16 @ 4:00, Back To School Rally- Test your knowledge of money and budgeting with Travis Credit Union.

Thursday 9/17 @ 4:30, Building Your Finances- Organize your finances, avoid debt, build credit, and establish savings with Anthony Volkar, Financial Counselor for Travis Credit Union.

Friday 9/18 @ 4:30, Yoga For Stress Relief- Stretch it out with Amber Irfan, Yoga Enthusiast for the Woodland Library.

Saturday 9/19 @ 11 AM, Dancing For Health & Happiness- Wake up and dance with Coco, Zumba Instructor.

Week Four: Civic Engagement & How to Vote

Wednesday 9/23 @ 4:30, Civic Engagement- Meaningful, intentional, and successful impact as an elected official with Rogelio Villagrana, Woodland Joint Unified School District Board Trustee.

Thursday 9/24 @ 4:30, Voter Registration- Learn how to vote with Mari Perla, The League of Women Voters.

Saturday 9/26 *Special Event*, Youth Empowerment Summit- Learn all about the election process with the Yolo County Elections Office.

Week Five: Activism, Anti-Racism, & Mental Health

Wednesday 9/30 @ 4:30, Activism & Anti-Racism- Candid conversations about race, racism, and how to be an ally with Tessa Smith, Family Partner/Outreach Specialist and Mental Health Services.

Thursday 10/1 @ 4:30, Mental Health & Self-Care- Take care of your mental health with Tessa Smith, Family Partner/Outreach Specialist and Mental Health Services.

Saturday 10/2 @ 11 AM, Peace of Art- Find inner peace through paint with Rhea, The Painting Librarian.

Adulting 101 is sponsored by Measure J, and Friends of the Woodland Public Library.
