Head to Downtown Woodland this weekend for a special lineup of live entertainment in addition to the usual food, drink, and retail options we know and love.
Although the “Celebrate Woodland” sesquicentennial festivities were postponed until Spring 2022, Woodlanders can still enjoy live music this Saturday, October 16 on the original festival date. Blue Note Brewing will host Shotgun Slim from 1 - 4 PM and The Nipper Brothers from 5 - 8 PM, while Father Paddy’s will feature The Pikeys from 5 - 7 PM outside on First Street and The Tempest from 8 - 11 PM inside the pub.
Woodlanders can also check out an outdoor movie on Saturday night in celebration of Chicano / Latino heritage. City Councilmember Vicky Fernandez, students, and Brown Issues Yolo County members invite the Woodland community to a 6:30 PM showing of “McFarland, USA” at 2nd and Main. There will also be a special presentation by Thomas Valles, an actual member of the state champion McFarland High School cross country team featured in the 2015 film. This event also recognizes Indigenous People’s Day, October 11, and acknowledges that the gathering will take place on the longtime territory of the Patwin People. Face coverings are required, hand sanitizers will be available, and community members are asked to bring their own chairs.
Finally, don’t miss a very special one-man-show at the Historic Woodland Opera House. “Satchmo at the Waldorf,” directed and performed by actor James Wheatley, takes the viewer back to 1971 inside Louis Armstrong’s dressing room just after a performance at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Wheatley plays three different characters in a challenging show that highlights each character’s perspective of their own and Louis’ journey. Only two shows are scheduled - Saturday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 2:30 PM - and Woodlanders should not miss this unique opportunity. The show is suitable for patrons ages 14 and up.
