[ARCHIVED] Honoring MLK's Contributions to the Movement for Justice & Equality

Honoring Dr. King 2021-22

The City of Woodland invites community members to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in a day of service and a junior art, poetry, and essay contest.

Woodlanders can roll up their sleeves on Saturday, January 15 for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Taking time to volunteer on a Day of Service honors Dr. King and his belief in giving back to one’s community. Engaging in public service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."

The following organizations will host community service projects:

  • Woodland Tree Foundation & Tuleyome will host a tree planting in Woodland Regional Park Preserve from 8 – 11:30 AM. Click here to sign up.
  • United Way California Capital Region & CCHOC will host a beautification project at Casa del Sol from 9 – 11 AM. Click here to sign up.

The City also encourages local students to participate in a Junior Art, Poetry, and Essay Contest.

  • Contest theme: How does Dr. King’s dream live on in your life and community?
  • Divisions: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, College Student
  • Award for each division winner: a $100 gift card

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, January 5. Please submit original entries by mail or hand deliver to Woodland Community & Senior Center, 2001 East Street, Woodland, CA  95776. Students may also submit online at www.cityofwoodland.org/MLK.

Following the service projects on January 15, the City invites Woodlanders to a Commemorative Program reflecting on Dr. King’s contributions to the movement for justice and equality. The program will include local speakers and feature the winners of the Junior Art, Poetry, and Essay Contest. The event will begin at noon in Heritage Plaza and lunch will be provided to the first 100 in attendance.
