The City of Woodland invites community members to commemorate the life and work of labor and civil rights leader César Chávez on Thursday, March 31 at 5:30 PM in Heritage Plaza. The celebration will include speakers, music, and singing to honor Chávez’s legacy and accomplishments.
Families are encouraged to attend so that children of all ages can learn about how Chávez improved labor conditions and protected civil rights for generations of agricultural workers. Crafts and games will be provided along with scholarship information for the City’s recreation programs, including swimming lessons and summer camps.
Youth Essay Contest: Students in grades 7-12 are invited to write a 500-word essay responding to the prompt “How has César Chávez influenced your life and what impact will his legacy have on your future?” Prizes will be awarded for winners. First place winners will be invited to read their speeches at the celebration on March 31. All contest entries must be submitted by March 25 to WoodlandCSD@cityofwoodland.org.
